Dear Fosters,
With you all, we honor with thanksgiving the life of Dr Bob and grieve his passing. Truly, a great man has passed. For so many, his very name evoked a sense of awe at what could be accomplished by a man (and woman!) with vision, energy and a consuming faith.
We remember his powerful persona. One lunch date with Dr Bob in 1981 set the course of our lives for many years to come. His appeals were hard to ignore. His commanding presence in a room was hard to match.
His physical traits meshed with that persona. Those prize winning sideburns! That unmistakeable profile! That contagious booming laugh! The elephant-hide shoes!
But his simple spirituality was most endearing. I can still hear his whispered "Yes!" as he listened to others pray. His sermons were uncomplicated and compelling.
Longfellow wrote, "When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men."
By God's grace, may the light of his life shine on.
