He was a man who knew God, drenched in Scripture, with a deep love for God's world. Serving God, he would do hard things, not because they were hard, but because God wanted them done and was going to do them. And he communicated that: his trusting, thrusting vision was infectious, drawing in hundreds of other people over the years. And he did it with a loud, bursting laugh—sheer joy.

Another thought on joy from Stuart
I was telling our son Luke this week that his grandfather was one of the most complete LEADERS I have known. He was not a mere manager, using people to get tasks done (though he got a lot of things done). He was not a mere carer, concerned for people's hurts and feelings (Dad was sensitive and discerning, but he tended to think that the solution to most troubles was to be tough, take risks and get on with it. Self-pity got little space.) He was not a mere visionary, seeing problems and dreaming up solutions without implementing anything. He was not a mere risk-taker, enjoying the thrill.
