I think more than anything Dr Bob lived a FULL life – a full life of service dedicated to his God, his family and others.
I only spent a short time with Bob and Belva. We met as we were preparing for the mission field. Dr Bob, at age 80, was the speaker at Maranatha Bible Camp. He invited us to come and spend the week at the camp.
While trying to raise funds for a hospital in Angola (he had just visited while sleeping in a tent for several weeks) he sacrificially gave up his own time so that we could share about the ministry in Mozambique. He helped us raise the funds we needed so that we could leave for the mission field.
Of course, before meeting Dr Bob and Belva we wanted to learn more about him so we bought a copy of The Sword and the Scalpel. After reading the book we felt we were meeting a legend. Needless to say we felt a bit intimidated going to the conference with such a man who courageously and fearlessly served, loved, and ministered to so many.
As we met for the first time it was apparent that even at age 80 he still had the same energy, conviction, and passion for ministering and serving God and people. He spoke that week with passion and conviction, he played with our kids, and he served us at the same time by giving up his own time to allow us to speak. What can I say: this is the way he lived his life – full of service, full of love, full of sacrifice. We were privileged and blessed that week to meet and spend time with Dr Bob. We will remember him always.
